By Kathy Kaufman

If you want to become an avionics technician, you will first have to attend one of the 170 schools that have been certified by the FAA. Having completed the course of aircraft mechanic training, finding a good job should not be a problem. However, it will still be difficult to find opportunities in major airlines which have better terms and conditions of remuneration. If you study avionic repairs, be sure that there will be more opportunities especially in small and regional commuter airlines, as well as in FAA repair stations.

The main work of these professionals is to ensure that an airplane is able to perform to its optimum level at all times. They should ensure that regular maintenance are carried out, as well as scheduled repairs. Also, the FAA stipulates that inspections have to be done before an airplane takes off.

The technicians basically work with the avionics electronics system. This refers to the instruments as well as computers which control flight, engine and other important functions of airplane, like radio communication and aircraft navigation. These systems form an integral part of airplane design. Thus, avionics experts ensure that these systems are maintained and repaired.

The most obvious place of work for avionics experts is repair stations although some will be found working in airfields and also hangers. They work to avoid rescheduling of flights that may cause inconveniences to travelling customers. Their working ours is not necessarily 9-5 but is more of 8-hour shifts. On average, they will work 40 hours a week.

To begin a journey in this career, first you have to be enrolled in one of 170 of Aviation maintenance Technician schools. The schools are FAA-certified. As a requirement, at least 1900 hours of study must be completed, and this may take between 2 and 4 years. There are certain schools which offer both 2-year and 4-year degree courses in aviation maintenance management, avionics and aviation technology.

As technology continues to play a crucial role in different aspects of life, most colleges are emphasizing on newer technologies. Leading the pack are aviation electronics as well as turbine engines. What this means is that an individual must have strong background in computer and electronics in order to stand a chance of getting a job. Therefore, one must take courses in mathematics, physics, mechanics, and computer science. Since these people will also be required to submit reports, writing courses are also very important.

FAA regulations stipulate that maintenance of an aircraft can only be completed by a mechanic who has been certified. Alternatively, the person doing it has to work under a certified mechanic. Airlines therefore tend to look for mechanics that have been certified. These certifications can be in power plant mechanics, airframe mechanics or combined certificate of A&P.

It is mandatory to have worked for a minimum period of 18-30 months, in order that a person gets certified as a qualified avionic repairs expert. There are cases when students can complete FAA-approved programs while at school and get certified. The requirements are that besides formal training, a person must sit and pass exams. Getting certified is not enough; one has to maintain this certification by studying further.
