Tips On How To Chose The Right Motorcycle Hauler For Your Needs

By Bernice Terry

Take a minute and think, chances are most people have never heard of anyone purchasing a new bike for the motorcycle hauler that they already have. Generally most people will purchase themselves a hauler after buying a bike to haul. It is important to consider all the possible options before you spend your money on something which could, if poorly constructed, cause damage to your bike.

The reasons for getting one are as varied as there are people. Some people dread the thought of riding cross country braving the wind and the rain. Sometimes it is just too hot, or too cold, or too dusty to enjoy a long ride. Sometimes it is just a maintenance issue, fewer miles on your bike means it will last longer and be worth more in the long run should you choose to ever sell it.

When anyone resolves to finally get a cycle trailer something they should look at is whether to use a closed or open trailer. It is amazing how so many people take hours cleaning their bike up and do not want strange people getting close to it, only to drive it around with an open type trailer. Most closed trailers will cost you more money but they protect your bike from the elements.

You should also think about what vehicle you will use to pull the trailer with. Small cars will use less fuel but will only pull a smaller lightweight trailer over hills. If you own a bigger more powerful v-8 car or truck a larger trailer could be used successfully.

Another item is if you should buy a double or single type carrier. Many singles are constructed just for carrying only one motorcycle and with gear. They are usually much lighter and smaller. Many doubles can take two motorcycles with gear, though they may move one at slow speeds for small distances. They are built stronger and heavier than most singles.

As a rule most trailers are constructed from two different types of materials, steel and aluminum. Of the two aluminum is the lighter, but can make for a rougher ride down the road. They have a habit of shaking and rattling a lot. Steel trailers are generally built stronger, but can weigh considerately more. Be careful though, just because it is steel does not mean it is well built.

Few things are as discouraging than carefully doing your research before you buy something but when you take it home you find out it is trash. Speak with your buddies about what works for them. Most any bike shop will be a good source for advice too. You could also try renting it first to see if it works ok.

Always look over any motorcycle hauler carefully to make sure it fits your needs before you buy it. Consider what you will be using it for and how long you plan to keep it. Keep in mind too that in the end you will always get exactly what you pay for.
