How To Get A Colorado Motorcycle License

By Cathy Mercer

Any person who wishes to ride a motorbike on state roads needs to have a Colorado motorcycle license. There are some great roads, plains and geographical features in the state that make the region a wonderful location for motorbike riding. Interested parties, however, need to have a class M endorsement on their driving licenses from the DMV before they can hit the road.

Initially, bikers could get a motorcycle-only driving license from the DMV. However, this is no longer the case. Nowadays, the state only gives an endorsement on an existing motor vehicle driving permit. This endorsement will qualify a person to ride a two-wheeler on state roads. This means that a person must first get a regular driving permit for vehicles then get an endorsement after passing the prescribed motorbike test.

In order to get your motorbike permit, you need to visit your local DMV office, submit proof of residency, age and identity, do the written motorbike test and pay the prescribed fee. There are additional requirements for applicants who are less than 18 years old. If every requirement has been met, a class M endorsement will be issued. This will allow you to ride any two-wheeled motorbike.

There are generally two ways in which applicants who are over 21 years of age can get a class M endorsement. They can either submit the certificate of completion of the Motorcycle Safety Foundation training course, or MSF, to the DMV, or pass a driving test at the local DMV office. Third parties can also administer the driving test. The applicant must also pay the required fees before the permit can be issued.

In order to get an endorsement, 16 and 17 year old applicants need to have held an instruction permit for at least 12 months before applying for the class M permit. During the driving test, the applicant must also show up with a registered and insured motorbike. Every applicant who falls within this age group must pass the MOST training program prior to filing the application with the DMV.

Before an endorsement can be given, the driving record of the applicant must be reviewed. New applicants who are over 18 years old also need to pass the physical aptitude test as well as the vision test. If everything is in order, a class M endorsement will be issued by the Colorado DMV.

When visiting the local DMV office, it is important that you know what to expect. The most convenient way to familiarize yourself with the process of getting the motorbike permit is reading the Motorcycle Operator Handbook. Doing some practice tests can also be very helpful. This will help to boost your confidence as you visit the DMV offices.

If you have a registered and insured motorbike, and the only thing that is stopping you from hitting the road is a Colorado motorcycle license, you should know that you can get an endorsement very fast. All you need is to be familiar with motor vehicle driving rules. Knowing the procedure for getting an endorsement will also help. Online resources can help make the entire process easier for you.
